This episode is about the Colonies of Benevolence: Frederiksoord, Veenhuizen, Ommerschans, Willemsoord, and Wilhelminaoord in the Netherlands, and Wortel and Merksplas in Belgium. In 2020, they were awarded the European Heritage Label for their significance in shaping European thought regarding socially marginalised people, whose rights are now protected under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. In nineteenth-century Europe, the Colonies were a groundbreaking initiative in the fight against poverty and unemployment. Themes that are still relevant today. The Colonies of Benevolence are part of a network of 60 sites across Europe with the European Heritage Label. Together, they promote European values, history, and ideals.
